I awoke to the sound of birds chirping. I rose up, opened my window and looked at the Modesto hot tubs sitting outside. I frowned knowing that I would have to clean it today instead of lounging in it. During the summers, I work every Saturday cleaning my neighbor Sami’s hot tub. I am about half of Sami’s age, but we’ve always clicked really well ever since I became her neighbor. She lost her late husband around the same time that I lost my father, both due to heart attacks. When we were mourning, we bonded and helped each other out in such a hard time. It’s really great to have a friend that is with you through thick and thin.
I made my way over to her house and began my usual cleaning. She came out onto the deck and sat on the patio and watched me work. She had brought out a pitcher of lemonade with her.
“Cassie, can you come have a seat?” She asked me.
“Sure, Sami. What’s going on?”
“I have a proposition for you. I’m looking to sell this hot tub. Would you be interested?”
I was astonished. I couldn’t believe she was trying to sell her hot tub. She has had this hot tub for decades. It was such a staple of her identity.
“Why are you wanting to sell it?” I inquired.
“I’m moving. And I wan-“ I cut her off before she could finish her sentence.
“You’re moving?! Why? What’s going on?” I was talking at a million miles a second.
“Calm down, honey. I’m going to live with my son. I think it is best because things have certainly not been easy since I lost James…” She recollected. “..Anyways, I want someone special to have it. That someone special is you.”
“Why me?” I asked.
“You’ve been here with me through everything the past couple of years. You hold me up when I’m weak. And you certainly take good care of it.” She explained.
“Well, y-!” She cut me off before I could give her my final answer.
“I just have one condition. I want you to really live with this hot tub. Not just something in your backyard you get into every once in a while. Really use it, like me and my family did.” She went inside and came back out with a photo album. She laid it on the table and opened up a lifelong of memories. There were hundreds of pictures of birthday parties, celebrations, cookouts and more. All the pictures involved the hot tub.
“James and I had so many great memories with this hot tub. We raised our kids and our grandkids around it. It really meant a lot to the both of us.”
“I’ll use it all the time! I’ll make it a part of my life just like it was a part of yours. Don’t worry, I won’t let those memories be forgotten.” I assured her.
“You have no idea how much that means to be, Cassie. Don’t let my family’s memories be forgotten, and create your own new ones with your family.”
“Of course. I have no doubt that my kids are going to be thrilled about the news! And Sami, I want you to know that you can come over anytime you’d like to see it. As long as you give me a good deal on it, of course.”
We laughed and went back inside her house to talk more about the deal.
